Understanding SMTP Settings

SMTP Host

  • Usually starts with smtp. followed by your email domain
  • Examples: smtp.yourdomain.com, mail.yourdomain.com
  • Sometimes uses the main domain: yourdomain.com

Common Port Numbers

  • 587: Most common for TLS/STARTTLS (recommended)
  • 465: SSL encryption (older standard)
  • 25: Unencrypted (rarely used, often blocked)
  • 2525: Alternative port (used by some providers)

Encryption Types

  • TLS/STARTTLS: Modern, secure (recommended)
  • SSL: Older encryption method
  • None: No encryption (not recommended)

Troubleshooting SMTP Issues

Common Problems:

"Connection Refused" or "Cannot Connect"

  • Check the SMTP host spelling
  • Verify the port number
  • Ensure your firewall isn't blocking the connection

"Authentication Failed"

  • Use your app password, not regular password
  • Verify your email and password are correct
  • Check if 2FA is enabled on your account

"SSL/TLS Errors"

  • Try switching between ports 587 and 465
  • Check if your provider requires specific encryption

"Relay Not Permitted" or "Not Authorized"

  • Your email provider may restrict SMTP access
  • Check if you need to enable "Less secure apps" or similar
  • Verify you're using the correct authentication method

Provider-Specific Issues:

Corporate/Work Email:

  • May require VPN connection
  • Often has restricted SMTP access
  • Contact your IT department

Hosting Provider Email:

  • Check your hosting control panel for SMTP settings
